MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
Signalman  reports to the Employee-in-Charge, Signal Maintainer/Mechanic, Lead Hand, and Foreman. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • An emphasis on safety is critical for all employees. This can be a high risk environment as you will be working around heavy moving equipment
  • Moderate to heavy physical labor on an assigned area of track; including tasks such as, but not limited to:
    • signal equipment installation
    • Install ground systems
  • Electrical connection of rail reporting the color of the signal
  • Various loading and unloading of heavy materials such as tools and equipment to and from various vehicles and machines
  • Clearing railway crossings of brush and tall grass using handheld tools and equipment
  • Work as part of a team performing heavy Labour related to railway signaling systems, construction and maintenance
  • Participate in job briefings and demonstrate ability to follow instructions and work safely
  • Perform duties such as digging holes and trenches for laying cable, installing conduit and/or ducts
  • Iinstalling and leveling metal and concrete foundations, setting concrete piers
  • Occasional driving of company vehicle
  • Other duties as assigned

  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Basic understanding of survey grades and construction methods
  • Ability to work with MS applications (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Ability to read instructions, follow technical specifications and grade plans.
  • Ability to perform various types of physical labour including moderate to heavy lifting, standing, bending, shovelling, etc
  • Sound understanding of safety regulations, safe work practices and work procedures and be capable of assisting in maintaining safe work sites
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Perform duties in inclement weather, with possible exposure to severe weather conditions
  • Proficiency in the safe operation and maintenance of various related equipment and tools
  • Ability to maintain concentration and mental alertness in a variety of situations
  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and storage
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong stress management and time management skills

  • REQUIREMENTS
  • At least 1 year full time work experience as a General Labourer
  • Education or experience in Electronics/Electrical is considered an asset
  • Previous railway or construction experience is considered an asset
  • A Valid Operators License
  • Valid CSTS, First Aid, H2S Alive and Ground Disturbance level 2 courses are considered an asset
