POSITION TITLE: SUD TREATMENT PROGRAM SUBSTANCE USE PEER SUPPORT SPECIALIST

 

POSITION PURPOSE: The Peer Support Specialists provides peer support services that include case management and transition support services; provides client information that will help current clients regain control over their own life and recovery and rehabilitation process; refers and connects them to community services and assists client being discharged from the program with the transition process; serves as a role model in recovery and coping skills and performs related work as required.

 

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: All SUD Peer Support Specialists reports to SUD Substance Use Disorder Lead.

 

PROGRAM SUMMARY FOR HEALING OAKS CLINIC- SUBSTANCE USE DISORDER (SUD) TREATMENT PROGRAM

The Healing Oaks Substance Use Disorder Treatment Program provides outpatient substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, recovery, and ancillary services to adults aged 18 years and above, with substance use issues, including co-occurring mental health disorders. Services includes client and family centered, individualized, clinically effective, outcomes-driven, culturally competent, gender specific, trauma informed, developmentally appropriate, and inclusive of evidence-based treatment practices and recovery service approaches. Co-occurring disorder services includes clinical assessments for substance use and mental health conditions, care coordination and a “warm handoff” to appropriate level of care in the mental health system when need exceeds services available through the SUD program. Evidence based practices is utilized for all clients, including use of specific EPBs that demonstrate success for justice-involved populations as appropriate. 



Employment Requirements:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of social, healthcare, supportive and other services/resources available in the San Diego community; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, family members, other professional staff, and the public. Evidence-based practices and issues pertaining to psychosocial treatments for SUD, Motivational Interviewing, and Relapse Prevention. Knowledge of working with adults and families with co-occurring disorder, perinatal services for women and girls, gender responsive treatment, deaf and hard of hearing clients, adolescent services, clients involved with justice system, homeless population, LGBTQ+, veterans, and tribal communities. Experience working with a culturally diverse population and knowledge of cultural issues, values, & beliefs of the target population of adults w/ SMI, homelessness, co-occurring disorders, and criminogenic risks and needs, relevant to providing appropriate SUD program services; Exercise sound, expert independent judgment within general policy guidelines; Communicate clearly and concisely; operate a computer using word processing, spreadsheet, and database software applications; Operate standard office equipment.

 


Qualifications:

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: A high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and at least one (1) year of related experience and/or training with SMI population; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Graduates from the Peer Employment Training Program are preferred.

 

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires lived experience as a person in recovery from a mental health and/or co-occurring disorder; or as a family member of a person in recovery. If in recovery, candidate must demonstrate a mental health recovery milestone; substance abuse recovery requires a minimum of three years clean and sober. A Valid Driver’s License with current California automobile insurance; A Valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification; Negative TB test within 60 days prior to hire date or within 7 days after being hired;TB tests are required at the time of hire and annually thereafter. Proof of Completed Coronavirus (COVID-19) Vaccination is required upon hire.


Example of Major Functions:

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Engages and assists clients to connect with and obtain needed services in the community, such as health services, employment, substance abuse treatment services and housing services, that suit the individual’s needs; Engages individuals to actively utilize the bio-psychosocial rehabilitation services for determining personal objectives/goals for recovery and steps that need to be taken to achieve these goals; Leads Program Advisory Groups (PAG), Whole Health Action Management (WHAM) and Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) groups and AA groups; Provides relapse prevention services through coaching, supporting linkages to community resources, or education documentation in an individualized treatment or recovery plan; Maintains an active client caseload of clients who may require case management and/or transition support services; Works in coordination with the a multi-disciplinary team to meet the emotional and practical supportive needs of clients; Assists individuals to identify problems that may interfere with the achievement of their goals and help in the development and use of specific interventions needed for overcoming the problems; Teaches individuals how to identify and fight stigma and other factors that hinder the process of recovery and rehabilitation; Assists individuals how to make vocational choices, support their choices and help them overcome problems related to achieving their goals, including the finding and holding of a job; Assists clients in building social skills that will help them re-establish normal roles of life and re-integrate into their communities; Teaches and role models effective ways for recovery based on his / her personal recovery experience and training; Develops and shares recovery oriented materials; Informs individuals about community resources and how to utilize these in their recovery; Assists individuals with developing self-advocacy and engagement in a variety of activities that focus on recovery and empowerment; Provides individual and group mental health rehabilitation services as appropriate; requests assistance and guidance from management and professional staff when necessary to address participant issues and problems; Upholds all Program Safety Policies and Procedures; maintains a good rapport, respect and communication with law enforcement or court officials, participants and community service agencies; Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
