Job Description
SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Transit Vehicle Electronics Technician performs skilled testing, diagnosis, preventative maintenance, repair, and installation of electronic systems and equipment; Systems include communications systems, surveillance equipment, fare collection equipment, CAD/AVL systems, TSP systems, and other related equipment.

When other work load duties allow, perform a complete variety of mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair work on transit, Paratransit, and support vehicles and equipment. Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair gas and/or diesel-powered vehicles and support equipment, such as transmissions, engines, hybrid drive systems, suspensions, differentials, wheelchair systems, and brake systems.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY

The incumbent will perform frequent new and varied work situations involving a high degree of complexity. Work is performed in accordance with established and well-known policies and procedures, safety practices, and laws. Individuals assigned to this classification perform proficiently and independently under the general direction of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor and Lead Mechanic.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following summarizes the essential or key responsibilities/attributes of the position the incumbent will be required to perform with or without reasonable accommodation.

Typical Primary Tasks:
Repairs, replaces, or modifies electronic and electrical components and defective parts for a variety of equipment and systems controls;
Troubleshoots solid state electronic systems;
Fabricates and installs special electronic testing systems;
Services and maintains microprocessor control systems;
Inspects new microprocessor and solid state systems installed by contractors;
Calibrates and repairs test equipment;
Maintains parts inventory and computer inventory records;
Prepares various activity and status reports;
Prepares written reports, documents defects and repairs on inspection forms, work orders, or designated computer programs;
Operates computer for related data input and retrieval;
May be assigned to assist in various maintenance projects/campaigns or called upon to respond to a road call for emergency repairs;
May familiarize and cross-train other Maintenance Department Staff on transit vehicle electronic systems;
Performs secondary related tasks as required.
Performs all Preventative Maintenance on electronic systems and related equipment. 

Typical Secondary Tasks: Perform scheduled preventative maintenance work on transit coaches and support vehicles (gas and diesel) to include complete servicing procedures related to lubrication, fuel, cooling, wheelchair lifts, air conditioning, transmissions, fareboxes, and other transit-related systems. 

Troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust or repair diesel and gas engines (electronically and mechanically controlled) in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications. Replace defective parts such as governors, injectors, blowers, and bearings. Assemble, reinstall, and test repairs for proper performance. 

Troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust or repair electronically controlled transmissions and heavy-duty differentials. Set up and adjust to specifications, reassemble, install, and test.

Troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust or repair defective or worn steering and suspension components such as wheel bearings, tie rods, springs, bushings, steering gear boxes, and other related components.

Troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust or repair mechanical and electrical subsystems such as multiplex systems, alternators, starters, fuel injection systems, wheelchair systems, and farebox systems. As required, disassemble unit down to components level, replace defective parts, reassemble, install, and test repaired or overhauled units.

Troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust and repair air conditioning systems. Diagnose malfunction and repair or replace motors, compressors, and other related units.

Troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust and repair air and hydraulic brake systems including ABS/ATC systems. Repair, install, and test as needed.

Use a variety of hand and power tools and equipment such as wrenches, jacks, presses, steam cleaners, band saws, and lathes.

Work with repair work orders and parts requests.

Use computer system to input and extract data.

OTHER FUNCTIONS

Make emergency repairs and road calls in the field as needed.

Remove and install windows and windshields of various types as needed.

Perform other maintenance-related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Requires knowledge of the field assignment sufficient to perform thoroughly and accurately the full scope of responsibility as illustrated by example in the above job description.

Training, education, and experience equivalent to an AA or AS degree from an accredited college in Electronic or Computer Technology or one (1) year of experience in electronic maintenance and repair preferred. Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a journey level mechanic preferred related to Transit/Truck repair. Education in a related field may be substituted for experience.

Effective performance requires application of knowledge of gas and diesel-type equipment and electrical systems. Must have the ability to identify, analyze, and correct malfunctions in a timely manner due to the need for maximum utilization of the fleet.

Requires knowledge of shop techniques and procedures. 

Must be able to read, understand, and apply shop manual specifications and information.

Must be able to recognize differences in colors and perceive three dimensions to ensure accuracy and safety in equipment maintenance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS

Ability to perform continuous physical effort including frequent bending, stooping, walking, standing, kneeling, twisting, manipulation, and/or heavy lifting and carrying of shop equipment and materials.

Must be able to hear warning horns when vehicles are in motion.

Must be able to recognize differences in colors and perceive three dimensions to ensure accuracy and safety in equipment maintenance.

Responsibilities of position may result in exposure to environmental influences (beyond normal office environment) such as poor ventilation and illumination, loud noises, adverse weather conditions, congestion, and accidents or health hazards on the job which includes working with chemicals and operating equipment/machinery.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of:
Solid state circuitry diagnostic and repair techniques and procedures;
Test equipment and tools needed in the repair, maintenance, and installation of electronic and electrical systems and equipment;
Theory and principles of electronic and electrical equipment and circuits;
Analog and digital control systems;
General shop safety procedures.

Ability to:
Test and repair electronic and electrical equipment and systems;
Read and interpret maintenance manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and specifications;
Keep current with state-of-the-art repair methods and procedures developments;
Learn operating system languages as required;
Prepare written reports, document defects and repairs on inspection forms, work orders, or designated computer programs;
Perform computer-related functions that allow for data input and retrieval;
Effectively read, understand, and use technical information found in repair manuals, service change bulletins, and applicable technical documents, including parts and supply manuals;
Learn and stay current on all new technologies introduced into the transit industries as it relates to bus vehicle electronic maintenance;
Familiarize other Maintenance Department Staff in the proper method of performing transit vehicle electronic maintenance;
Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of business.

Regular, dependable attendance required.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license from the state of residence and maintain a good driving record. A commercial driver’s license will be required within a specified time frame, determined by the supervisor, to maintain this position. 

Must obtain 609 air conditioning certification within six (6) months of hire. 

Must possess own tools in accordance with the minimum tool list requirement.

Must pass an employment physical examination and drug test to be certified for the position and maintain a physical condition, which, either with or without accommodation, allows completion of all essential duties.

This is a safety sensitive position subject to Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations.

Must be able to comply with C-TRAN’s nonsmoking policy and function in a nonsmoking work environment.

Must be able to work any day of the week and/or any shift, including days, swing, and graveyard.

If selected for the position, documentation that you are a United States citizen or an alien lawfully authorized to work in the United States will be required to establish your identity and work authorization in accordance with the employer’s obligation under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.

This position is covered under the provisions of an Agreement with International Association of Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) Union, Local 1432, District 24.

If selected for this position, employment will be conditional pending completion of a criminal background investigation.
