Job Description


Position Description

To formalize the “time with seniors” segment of new hire operator training, up to thirty (30) Behind-the-Wheel Coaches will be selected to include full-time and part-time fixed route and paratransit operators. Behind-the-Wheel Coaches will be trained and responsible for monitoring, coaching and supporting an operator trainee whenever one is assigned to a Coach’s run or block. Behind-the-Wheel Coaches must have met and maintained the Minimum Qualifications listed below. Behind-the-Wheel Coaches who are disqualified for any reason, will be removed from the program and no longer included in the assignment of trainees.  

A Behind-the-Wheel Coach will be paid a flat premium rate of two dollars ($2) per hour for time spent coaching to include pre- and post-trip inspections. 


Minimum Qualifications 

A qualified Behind-the-Wheel Coach must, at a minimum:

Possess/maintain a valid Class C or Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Passenger Endorsement and no Air Brake Restriction.
  
Possess/maintain a valid Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card.

Be in active work status having completed at the time of application, at least 9 months of service as a C-TRAN Coach Operator.  

Satisfy and maintain the following performance criteria for one (1) year immediately preceding the date of application:

1. Clean driving abstract. 
2. No preventable events.
3. Attendance occurrences rated below the system average.
4. No discipline related to operational safety or customer service for one (1) year immediately preceding the date of application.

Possess the ability and desire to create and maintain a positive learning environment for new employees.

Position Expectations

Behind-the-Wheel Coaches will be expected to:

Know and consistently apply laws, regulations, policies and practices pertaining to transit vehicle operation, passenger transport, and customer service.
Keep up-to-date on changes in C-TRAN service – schedules, fares, routes, system connectivity, rules for riders, and on-board technology.
Maintain confidentiality.
Demonstrate proper behind-the-wheel instructional techniques.
Provide timely and appropriate feedback to trainees.
Properly document trainee performance. 
Serve as a role model and mentor.
