Summary: The Medical Assistant provides direct clinical care and supports patient management, under the supervision of a provider. The M.A. performs clinical tasks, health education, and care coordination to ensure patients receive safe, high-quality, and culturally competent care. The role requires strict adherence to CCHC policies.

Salary Range
$18-$21 per hour 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Clinical Patient Care

  • Take and record vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, weight, height).
  • Assist with patient assessments and prepare patients for examinations or procedures.
  • Administer medications and vaccinations as prescribed, following protocols and within scope of practice.
  • Perform basic nursing procedures (e.g., wound care, catheter care, ear irrigations).
  • Monitor patient reactions to medications or treatments and report changes to the provider.
  • Collect and process lab specimens (blood, urine, etc.) following safety guidelines.
  • Perform basic point-of-care testing and document results accurately
  • Document all patient interactions, procedures, and treatments in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Assist with prior authorizations and coordination of care services.

2. Patient Education & Support

  • Provide clear instructions on medications, treatments, follow-up and self-care.
  • Educate patients on preventive health measures and chronic disease management.
  • Offer emotional support and advocate for patient needs.
  • Reinforce provider guidance regarding chronic disease management and preventative care.

3. Documentation & Records

  • Accurately document all interactions, treatments, and observations in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Maintain up-to-date patient records, ensuring compliance with CCHC standards.
  • Track and document immunizations, screenings, and follow-up care.

4. Coordination & Communication

  • Communicate patient concerns or abnormal findings to the provider.
  • Assist with coordinating referrals, lab work, imaging, and follow-up appointments.
  • Collaborate with medical assistants, nurses, providers, and administrative staff to ensure continuity of care.

5. Infection Control & Safety

  • Follow infection prevention and control procedures in all clinical areas.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment for patients and staff.

6. Equipment & Supplies

  • Prepare, clean, and stock exam rooms with necessary medical supplies.
  • Maintain and operate basic clinical equipment (e.g., blood pressure cuffs, thermometers, glucometers).
  • Monitor and report low inventory or malfunctioning equipment.

7. Professional Development

  • Participate in ongoing training, in-services, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Stay informed on scope-of-practice guidelines and regulatory changes related to nursing care.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • Completed an approved medical assistant program from a two-year college or technical school.
  • Six months to one year related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience, preferred.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures or government regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Skills

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Computer Skills

  • Computer knowledge and key boarding skills are required.

  • Current Certified Medical Assistant Certificate from accredited program in the State of Illinois.
