Position Summary:
Staff member will assists dentist during examination and treatment of patients.

Qualifications & Job Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Checks operatories are ready, stocked and clean at the beginning of each appointment.
  • Monitors patient flow.
  • Sets up room and tray for proper procedures.
  • Greets patients when seating and introduces self.
  • Takes and records medical and dental histories and vital signs of patient.
  • Anticipates and assists with the dentist’s needs.
  • Prepares patient, sterilizes and disinfects instruments, sets up instrument trays, prepares materials and assists dentist during dental procedures.
  • Takes dental diagnostic x-rays.
  • Educates patient on procedures being performed.
  • Makes preliminary impressions for study casts and occlusal registrations for mounting study casts.
  • Assists dentist in management of medical or dental emergencies.
  • Instructs patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs.
  • Charts all services into Electronic Health Record. Enters initials after each entry. Verifies correct date is recorded.
  • Provides postoperative instructions prescribed by the dentist.
  • Completes routing instructions.
  • Guides patient back to front desk and hands routing slip to receptionist so they know what type of follow up appointment is needed.
  • Records treatment information in patient records.
  • Applies protective coating of fluoride to teeth.
  • Oversees cleanliness of operatories and lab.
  • Helps all patents achieve the highest standard of dental care attainable.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the dentist.
  • Maintains equipment (autoclave, assistina, hand pieces, nitrous, etc.)
  •  Helps in other areas of the office when necessary (answering phones, registering patients, unpacking supplies, confirming patients, help in hygiene if have expanded functions).

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from four year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills

  • Knowledge of Electronic Health Record database software.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Certification from an accredited Dental Assisting program.
  • Must be CPR certified
  • Current Driver’s License
  • Current automobile insurance
