Position Summary:
The Certified Medical Assistant is responsible for functioning as an assistant to the physicians, nurse practitioners and LPNs in the areas of direct and indirect patient care and laboratory procedures. Essential functions of the position are included under job responsibilities.

Qualifications & Job Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Manages care of patient in collaboration with other health professionals and members of the healthcare team in order to make decisions about treatment and attain health goals.
  • Facilitates patient flow by preparing treatment rooms for examination of patients. Escorts patients from the waiting area to the exam room.
  • Provides timely telephone and walk-in triage including but not limited to: requests for lab results, inquiries regarding current condition, and/or chief complaint and determines the need for a visit or request to speak with the provider.
  • Interviews patients, measures/assesses vital signs such as pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight and height. Observes and records information into patient’s chat.
  • Collaborates with other members of the healthcare team to track and prompt patients for services due including but not limited to: HgA1C, pap smears, immunizations, blood pressure checks and weight checks.
  • Drapes patients with covering and positions instruments and equipment.
  • Hands instruments and materials to provider as directed.
  • Operates electrocardiograph (EKG) and other equipment to administer routine diagnostic tests or calls medical facility or department to schedule patients for tests.
  • Gives treatments as ordered. Assists with office procedures as ordered by the provider and performs routine laboratory tests in compliance with CLIA regulations.
  • Performs all functions including but not limited to the following: prepares patient for examinations and procedures, answers patient questions, performs routine laboratory work, gives injections, dresses wounds and incisions, performs blood pressure checks, measures height and weight and checks vision.
  • Elicits and records medical histories. Maintains clinical records in accordance with facility policies and procedures.
  • Prepares specimens to be sent to referral lab. Maintains lab log.
  • Assists nursing staff by providing patient support and outreach.
  • Provides appropriate patient follow-up as ordered by provider.
  • Performs emergency care and CPR in outpatient setting in accordance with facility protocol.
  • Cleans and maintains treatment rooms, clinical supplies and equipment.
  • Cleans and sterilizes instruments.
  • Inventories and orders medical supplies and materials by turning into appropriate supervisor for approval.
  • Assists with answering the phone, scheduling appointments, providing information as requested and screening calls to the providers.
  • Receives money for bills, performs secretarial tasks and completes insurance forms as needed.
  • Supports an on-going quality assurance program in order to maintain and improve the quality of patient care provided including activities involving chronic disease and health management programs.
  • Attends and participates in required morning team huddle to facilitate patient care.
  • Participates in staff meetings and facility committees.
  • Participates in continuing education and in-service programs.
  • Adheres to CCHD and OSHA policies related to infection control practices.
