Description:

The Therapeutic Mentor assists in the provision of direct clinical services to clients on an individual, group, and family basis in the office and in community settings to teach symptom-management techniques and promote personal growth and development by assisting persons served to cope with internal and external stresses. In working directly with youth and families, the Therapeutic Mentor helps engage youth and families, and acts as a role model with all clients by sharing their experience and competency in recovery, resiliency, healthy behaviors and healthy lifestyles. Carries out support functions and assists in treatment; provides education, support and consultation to clients and families and promotes recovery, empowerment, self-determination and decision-making by persons served.

Provide counseling and support, drawing on common experiences as a family member or caregiver to another person who is living with a mental health condition, to validate individuals’ experiences and to provide guidance and encouragement. Serve as a mentor to promote hope and empowerment.

Act as an interpreter to help non-mental health consumer team members better understand and empathize with each person’s unique and subjective experience and perceptions. Provide expertise and consultation from a peer perspective to the entire team concerning the person’s experiences with symptoms of mental illness, the effects and side-effects of medications, response to and opinions of treatment, and experiences of recovery.

Help other team members identify and understand culture-wide stigma and discrimination against people with mental illness and develop strategies to eliminate stigma within the team. Collaborate with the team to promote a team culture in which each person’s point of view, experiences, and preferences are recognized, understood, and respected, and in which self-determination and decision-making in treatment planning are maximized and supported.

Providing ongoing assessment, problem solving, side-by-side services, skill training, supervision (e.g., prompts, assignment, monitoring, encouragement), and environmental adaptations to assist persons served with activities of daily living.


Engage with youth and families on an individual basis as identified in the treatment team. Identifies recovery goals, teaches and mentors youth and families in problem-solving skills. Teaches youth and families how to identify and overcome fears, learn coping strategies, and encourages self-management and relapse prevention. Encourages socialization with family and friends as well as participation in community based groups such as churches and volunteer work.

Organize and facilitates group activities for youth and families, as assigned. Leads WRAP classes and other group meetings. Shares leadership of programs on chronic condition self-management and healthy lifestyle topics. Serves as a role model in living a healthy lifestyle.

 


Education and Experience:
  • A family member or caregiver to another person who is living with a mental health condition; or
  • Certification as a Certified Recovery Peer Specialist certified by the Florida Certification Board; or
  • A minimum of one year of experience working directly with children or adolescents with behavioral health needs. 

Shift: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm 

Rate of Pay: $9.00 - $10.59hr; depends on if you are certified by the Florida Certification Board

To be considered for employment, you will be required to undergo a criminal background check, employment references check, and drug screening. In addition you must have a current and valid driver's license with no more than 6 points. A 3 year driving record will also be required upon hire.
