GENERAL PURPOSE: 
Ensuring safety is a priority, Heavy Duty Mechanics work in a team environment to carry out inspections, observation and reporting of the condition and mechanical repairs/maintenance required to all equipment, vehicles, trailers and miscellaneous equipment as well as work in the field to observe operators and operating condition of the equipment maintenance procedures, daily inspections and log books.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Comply with GHS and OH&S safety standards and comply with all corresponding administrative procedures
  • Carry out inspections as per preventative maintenance schedules
  • Conduct safety checks on vehicles and equipment
  • Perform repairs and designated preventative maintenance services
  • Review, completes or assigns repairs as per notes in equipment and daily driver log books
  • Utilize electronic diagnostic tools to interpret failure causes, initiate or assign repairs such as CUMMINS INSITE
  • Diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, clutches, gear boxes, cooling systems, electrical systems, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, exhaust, brakes, suspension, etc. on a variety of specialized railway heavy equipment, construction equipment, heavy duty trucks and light duty trucks
  • Estimate time and materials costs on equipment and vehicle repairs and requisition parts
  • Work with onsite Foreman’s and Supervisor’s to discuss equipment repairs and prioritize repairs as required and equipment
  • Responsible for onsite mobile inventory trailers, maintain cleanliness, restocking and administrative paperwork
  • Complete all necessary administrative paperwork such as inspection forms, work orders, parts/inventory requisition forms and equipment/vehicle log books
  • Comply with hours of service regulations and standards
  • Actively take part in daily/weekly safety meetings
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment
  • Assist or take on roles of Lead Hand or Foreman when required


 


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Good communication skills both verbal and written
  • Have the ability to take on large volumes of work and stressful situations
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Sound understanding of safety regulations, safe work practices and work procedures and be capable of assisting in maintaining safe work sites
  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong stress management and time management skills
  • Perform duties in inclement weather, with possible exposure to severe weather conditions


REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate for this role will demonstrate the following skills and experiences:

  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and storage

  • Proficiency in the safe operation and maintenance of various related equipment and tools
