MAIN PURPOSE: 

Reporting to the Lead Hand/Foreman/Superintendent or Project Manager, signals and communications Maintainers ensure the proper functioning of the installations according to safety practices.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • An emphasis on safety is critical for all employees. This can be a high risk environment as you will be working around heavy moving equipment
  • Critical performance areas include the following but may vary depending on the location and circumstances:
  • Dig holes and trenches for laying cable
  • Install and level metal and concrete foundations and stand masts
  • Operate road and rail vehicles
  • Install signals and communications systems
  • Replace defective or used cables
  • Maintain his/her territory in optimal condition to reduce or avoid trouble calls
  • Maintain tools and equipment in ready-for-service condition
  • Perform all periodic inspection and tests as per railway and company standards
  • Perform various tasks assigned by the Maintenance Superintendent
  • Work cooperatively with other maintainers on technical issues and troubleshooting
  • Participate in job briefings and demonstrate ability to follow instructions and work safely
  • General labor duties as required
  • Other duties as assigned




KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
The successful candidate for this role will demonstrate the following skills and experiences:

  • Ability to work with MS applications (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Ability to read instructions, follow technical specifications and grade plans.
  • Ability to perform various types of physical labour including moderate to heavy lifting, standing, bending, shovelling, etc. 
  • Sound understanding of safety regulations, safe work practices and work procedures and be capable of assisting in maintaining safe work sites
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Perform duties in inclement weather, with possible exposure to severe weather conditions
  • Proficiency in the safe operation and maintenance of various related equipment and tools
  • Ability to maintain concentration and mental alertness in a variety of situations
  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and storage
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong stress management and time management skills

  • JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • A high school diploma with at least 1 year full time signals or electrical experience
  • Education or experience in Electronics/Electrical is considered an asset
  • Previous railway or construction experience is considered an asset
  • A Valid Operator’s License
  • Valid CSTS, First Aid, H2S Alive and Ground Disturbance level 2 courses are considered an asset
  • Basic understanding of survey grades and construction methods
