The Superintendent is responsible for managing and leading a team of workers and foremen to deliver a project. The Superintendent shall ensure that the security, quality, profitability, and planning meets the customer’s expectations. Along with these duties, the Superintendent will be managing requirements and the equipment necessary for the implementation of the project. As well, this role will supervise the construction from the start and monitor the progress of the work on the site. Other duties include planning work schedules, monitoring the quality of the work executed, ensure that contractual obligations are met and making sure the project is running smoothly. The Superintendent will also ensure that the occupational safety and health regulations are respected and enforced, as per company policies.


  • Ensure adequate resources are in place including scheduling labour, equipment and materials.
  • Review all contracts, project documentation and plans to ensure that the work in the field is built to the most recent specifications and scope of work.
  • Pre-plan work activities to develop best means and methods, including safety action plans.
  • Supervises total construction and maintenance effort in the field to ensure work is in accordance with design, budget and schedule.
  • Assigns work to various crews. Plan the day-to-day operations on the assigned project, and ensure that proper resources are in place for the timely completion of work i.e., labour, equipment, and material.
  • Investigates alternative work methods and materials which will either improve efficiency and/or quality of work performed.
  • Communicate with the Project Manager, General Contractor and customer to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction and with sub-contractors to coordinate work, goals, etc.
  • Maintain a dedication to safety at all times by modeling, providing education and enforcing safe work practices, company policies and procedures.  Ensure that proper safety equipment is available and used by all field personnel.
  • Perform a variety of related administrative tasks such as production reports, review and approve timesheets for accuracy, job coding, equipment logs, inspection reports, change orders,
  • updating project files and participate in invoicing when necessary.
  • Perform other related administrative or project based duties as assigned.
  • Provide coaching and instruction to all crew members.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Exercise sound judgment and give clear direction.
  • Work effectively in a team environment as a contributing team player.


  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s license or equivalent
  • High School graduation plus post-secondary training in a related field or equivalent education, training and experience 
  • A minimum of 5 years recent related construction experience.  Railway experience would be an asset.
  • Valid certification in Canadian Railway Operating Rules (CROR).
  • Training in First Aid, WHMIS, Confined Space, CSTS, and other mandatory courses as required.
