Excavator Operator

Under the guidance and direction of the site foreman and or direct supervisor, the Excavator Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment in an efficient, safe and appropriate manner. The Excavator Operator must also clean, maintain and secure all equipment as directed by policies and procedures.


  • Operates excavator in an efficient manner and for its intended use while supporting construction activities.
  • Conducts pre-operational checks on equipment and cleans, lubricates and refills equipment as necessary; notifies the supervisor or foreman of all damaged or unsafe equipment or tools.
  • This excavator will be cutting rail with a shear attachment and will be picking up rail up to 40 long to transport them to the nearest siding to finally dispose them into rail cars.
  • Attends and participates in various meetings such as monthly safety meetings, pre-job and tailgate meetings.
  • Cleans excavator as schedules and/or required, including removing personal belongings and trash from cab and wiping up spills etc.
  • Demonstrates good judgment and the ability to think problems through; where applicable, identifies and suggests improvements improving job quality.
  • Interacts with internal or external customers in a professional, courteous and respectful manner that contributes toward a positive and productive work site.

  • Basic understanding of survey grades and construction method
  • Ability to read instructions, follow technical specifications and grade plans
  • Ability to perform various types of physical labour including moderate to heavy lifting, standing, bending, shovelling, etc.
  • Sound understanding of safety regulations, safe work practices and work procedures and be capable of assisting in maintaining safe work sites
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Perform duties in inclement weather, with possible exposure to severe weather conditions
  • Proficiency in the safe operation and maintenance of various related equipment and tools
  • Ability to maintain concentration and mental alertness in a variety of situations<
  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and storage
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong stress management and time management skills

  • A high school diploma with at least 2 years full time work experience as an excavator operator supporting construction.
  • A Valid Class 5 Operators License
  • Must have experience operating the following equipment: excavator (Caterpillar, Hitachi, John Deer and/or Komatsu mini 50’s to 800
  • Experience operating heavy equipment with GPS tracking devices such as Trimble or Topcon is considered an asset
  • Valid CSTS, First Aid, H2S Alive and Ground Disturbance level 2 courses are considered an asset
