GENERAL PURPOSE:

Ensuring safety is a priority, Signals Assistants work in a team environment to build and maintain railways in numerous locations across Eastern Canada. The main job duties include: assisting with the installation of various equipment such as signals lights, switch machines, crossing warning devices, and perform the field cabling of wayside signals equipment and the wiring of control point and crossing bungalows. Amongst other general labourer duties, Signals Assistants operate various hand held tools, small equipment, and handle hazardous materials while frequently performing physical work in all weather conditions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensuring safety is a priority to self, co-workers, the general public, and the assets of the company by following company and industry policies and procedures
  • General labourer duties, including but not limited to: pulling spikes from rail by hand and hammering spikes into rail with various hand held tools
  • Digging trenches, shoveling rocks and dirt for manual grading of surfaces and clearing ballasts
  • Various loading and unloading of heavy materials such as: tools and equipment (spikes, tie plates, joint bars, etc.) to and from various vehicles and machines
  • Clearing railway crossings of brush and tall grass using hand held tools and equipment
  • Snow removal from crossings, using shovels, back pack blowers, brooms etc.
  • Removal of tie plates from the rail
  • Occasional driving of company vehicle

  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    The successful candidate for this role will demonstrate the following skills and experiences:

  • Ability to operate required tools in a safe and responsible manner 
  • Knowledge of workplace safety and safe lifting and handling procedures
  • Ability to operate required equipment in a safe and responsible manner 
  • Effective communication skills  
  • Effective client service and public interaction skills 
  • Ability to work independently and in teams 
  • Fluent in reading, writing and understanding the English language 
  • Being respectful and courteous to others, demonstrating cultural awareness of others and good work ethics

    REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1 year full time work experience in a construction environment
  • Minimum 6 months experience working in railway industry
  • A Valid Operator’s License
  • Basic understanding of survey grades and construction methods
  • Ability to read instructions, follow technical specifications and grade plans
  • Repetitive bending, and standing for long period of time, lifting and carrying up to 50lbs un-assisted, repetitive swinging motions, walking on uneven surfaces (approx. 3 miles/day)
  • Exposed to outdoors regularly in all weather conditions (summer heat, rain, winter cold, etc.)
  • Working with hazardous materials such as creosote, lubricants, oil, gasoline, diesel and regular exposure to dusty conditions
  • Continuous, regular exposure to loud noise
  • Out of town work, overnight travel as required
