Thermite Welder- Alberta and Western Canada

Under the guidance and direction of the site foreman and or direct supervisor, the Thermite Welder is responsible for hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products in an efficient, safe and appropriate manner. The Thermite Welder must also clean, align and maintain welding equipment as directed by policies and procedures.


  • Operates thermite welding machine to join metal components, such as crankshafts, ship stern frames, machine parts and railroad and craneway rails.
  • Aligns and secures parts ion holding fixture
  • Cuts gap in parts parallel to joint, using gas torch
  • Places wax pattern and mold box around gap
  • Places gate and riser patterns into specific positions
  • Pulls plug to automatically pour specified amount of thermite material into mold box
  • Ignites kerosene preheater to melt wax and dry mold, using gas torch
  • Places powder on thermit  material and ignites compound, using gas torch, to start thermite welding reaction
  • Breaks mold, using handtools,
  • Cuts off gates and risers, using gas torch
  • Has worked on main line track during track blocks
  • Abide by safety procedures, conducting pre-start checks on machinery & safe operations
  • Ensuring safety is a priority to self, fellow workers, the general public and the assets of the company and following policies and procedures set out by the company
  • Daily walk around inspection if machine, general housekeeping of machine and minor repairs to machine when necessary to ensure safe operation 
  • Daily administration of log books, job briefings etc. mandated by law ensuring compliance with governed regulations of transportation such as DOT logs when applicable
  • Compliance to track rules and instructions according to CROR 
  • Assist with manual labour when necessary
  • Communicate effectively over radio following CTC standards
  • Meet productivity level requirements set out by supervisors/foremen 
  • Other duties as assigned 


    The successful candidate for this role will demonstrate the following skills and experiences:

  • Ability to read instructions, follow technical specifications and grade plans
  • Ability to perform various types of physical labour including moderate to heavy lifting, standing, bending, shovelling, etc 
  • Sound understanding of safety regulations, safe work practices and work procedures and be capable of assisting in maintaining safe work sites
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Perform duties in inclement weather, with possible exposure to severe weather conditions 
  • Proficiency in the safe operation and maintenance of various related equipment and tools 
  • Ability to maintain concentration and mental alertness in a variety of situations 
  • Knowledge of workplace safety requirements and procedures
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance and storage


  • A high school diploma with at least 2 years full time work experience as a Mark IV Operator on the track
  • Experience in track construction & maintenance
  • Clear drivers abstract and clear criminal check required
  • Overnight travel, may be required
